On-Site Staff Training

For long-term care, dementia neurobehavioral and geropsychiatry units. Given the extended time that these patients reside in residential healthcare facilities; comprehensive behavioral management treatment programs can be established and effectively implemented once staff is trained.

Senior Care Residential and Community Programs offers staff training courses designed to:

  • Eliminate Iatrogenic Behavioral Disorders
  • Improve the quality of care delivered by healthcare workers
  • Reduce staff-to-patient ratios
  • Increase patient and staff safety

Our certified Dementia Care Specialist (DCS) training teaches staff how to quickly conduct a behavioral analysis, manipulation of triggers that cause behavior disorders, implementation of behavior interventions such as ADL desensitization, Snoezelen techniques, extinction, flooding, operant conditioning, etc.

For example (Case Study):
A 79-year-old female patient with Vascular Dementia and Psychotic Depression was extremely combative during ADL care. Often it would take 3 staff members to perform ADLs. ADL baseline data was obtained via videotaping. ADL Desensitization treatments began and various antecedents during the ADL process were analyzed and manipulated. After 3 weeks there were no episodes of combativeness when ADL desensitization was performed and the key antecedents were successfully manipulated.

The curriculum for the Certified Dementia Care Specialist Training includes:

  • An Overview of Dementias and Neurobehavioral Disorders
  • Managing the Cognitive Behavioral and Emotional Symptoms of the Dementia
  • ADLs Desensitization with Dementia Patients
  • The ABCs of Neurobehavioral Management
  • The Behavioral Analysis
  • Behavioral Interventions
  • Data Collection
  • Psychotropics and Dementia
  • Review

For department heads, we offer a 16 hours train-the-trainer certification course and for front-line staff members such as CNAs, we offer a 43-hour certification course. Those clinical staff members that complete the program receive the certification of Dementia Care Specialist (DCS) from Senior Care R & CP. The DCS designation can be used after the healthcare worker’s name or current credentials. The DCS certification can be renewed every two years.

Booster training courses are also available. These typically occur once every 12 weeks. Follow-up phone, e-mail or live consultations are also available at any time for a reasonable fee.
